The Bag

Steven and I went into the hospital a few days ago for our "pre-admission" appointment. Basically, they try to get as much paperwork done before you come in to have your baby, so that when we come in Steven doesn't have to figure out all the paperwork. (That might actually be entertaining) By far the best part of the appointment was when the nurse reminded us to bring the car seat and some going home clothes for Cooper. In that moment everything really hit Steven who looked at me and said, "He's going home with us." Yes Steven. We aren't leaving our newborn here with this less then pleasant woman.
Anyways, I was just going to open up a forum and ask everybody out there what they take to the hospital with them, or what they wish they could. I packed a bag for Cooper already, but am not sure if it is complete or not. So, what do you wish you had thought to take for your hospital stay, and what does the baby need for that first trip home?
Any input is appreciated!

Embarrassing to admit, but one time I forgot socks for the baby. Those little feetsies really need help staying warm. So, don't forget the socks. One thing I would reccommend NOT doing is bringing a book to read. Once, I checked in to be induced, and the rooms were all full. They asked if we would come back in about 2 hours, send us to go get something to eat, and we also stopped by the library. Having an epidural can at times be boring because if your labor drags on, a book is a nice thing to have. . .I thought at the time. Turns out the labor didn't last a long time, and instead when the nurse would come in the room in the middle of the night, or afternoon, or morning, to wake me to feed the baby, after they took the baby back to the nursery I just had to read one more chapter, which turned into 5 or 7 more chapters, and by the time I would put it down to go back to sleep, they would be bringing the baby back in to feed again. So, if you can't put a good book down like me, don't bring one to the hospital with you! Besides that, I'm sure you'll do just fine in your packing. You've always been a great planner.

Hey Steve! (and Cassie)
I haven't seen you since High School! How exciting -congrats on the baby! Glad I found your blog!
Even though you don't know me Cassie. I'll give you my advice! :) Hope you don't mind.
Something I always want for the labor & after is lip balm/lip gloss. I always get a bit dehydrated after, and my lips get so dry in there.
It always help make me feel better and not feel too grungy either! Perfect for visitors just dropping in.
Also a pair of warm socks for you. My feet always freeze in there! I also like have a hoodie/zip up jacket that I can put over the hospital gown when cold, but easy to use for nursing too!
Good luck- hope you don't mind all that advice from a stranger!

Cooper is coming!! Cooper is coming!! This is just too exciting. And, by the way, if you forget something (which I bet you won't!), any one of us locals can get it for you! Love, grandma

Your own bath towels! I forgot that I had thought of this when I had Kora. I was so mad that I didn't remember this when I had Canon. The hospital towels are tiny, rough and smell funny. Your own bath towel, wash rag etc would be SO NICE, and I will definitely remember this for the next one!

Hey Cassie! We are friends of Stevens, and we enjoy your blog! When we had our daughter Maisey, we took baby finger nail clippers and I am so glad we did. It's not fun to have her scratch you while you are nursing! Also, I packed some Swedish Fish and Jelly Bellies (2 of my favorite treats) and I was so glad that I did! I hope this helps!

Your own favorite shampoo, conditioner and soap. The hospitals always have yucky generic stuff - I hated it. I also brought UNO instead of a book. It helped keep me laughing. Umm. . . Knowing me - my own stash of favorite snacks INCLUDING chocolate - can't get that at the hospital. . . .
